What is the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service?

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service recognizes organizations that made a great contribution to society in the United Kingdom. It is the most prestigious award for a volunteer group, acknowledged in the 53 member states of the Commonwealth of Nations.

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service was created in 2002 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Queen’s coronation. It’s an annual award managed by the Cabinet Office of the United Kingdom. For a group to receive this award, it must have been operating at a high standard for at least three years continually in local areas. Through years of thorough and rigorous assessment, the award is given to groups whose work has significantly benefited others and sets the national benchmark for excellence in volunteering. The award is decided only after the Queen herself has given formal approval.

Procedure for Assessment and Selection

The procedure for assessment and selection of a recipient for the Queen’s Award is meticulous and prudent. It consists of a 5-step process:

1st Step: Each nomination is first evaluated in the county where the group works. As her Majesty’s representative in the county, the Lord Lieutenant leads the evaluation with the help of a County Assessment Panel of leading representatives from diverse sectors of the community. The Lord Lieutenant or his representatives, or both, generally visit the nominated group.

2nd Step: A Specialist Assessment Panel of independent volunteering experts from across the U.K. judge nominated groups based on the award criteria, taking into account the first evaluation.

3rd Step:  The panel passes its recommendations to the Main Award Committee.

4th Step: The Main Award Committee advise the Cabinet Office and the Minister for Civil Society.

5th Step: Finally, Queen gives her formal approval and the awardees are selected.

The procedure to be nominated for this award is very strict since the recipients are entitled to use the Queen’s Award emblem on their website, stationary and other printed material for five years.

The WMSCOG has consistently carried out volunteer services for four years in the U.K. It was selected as recipient after a rigorous assessment procedure that lasted for three years, and it was finally approved by Queen Elizabeth II herself.

During the three-year assessment, the county assessment panels visited the WMSCOG several times and examined the church from various angles to verify that the organization was worthy to receive the Queen’s Award. The examiners visited the church without notice, made phone calls, visited the places where the church carried out volunteer services and contacted the beneficiaries to confirm the veracity and sincerity of the activities.

Finally, after passing all the steps, the WMSCOG has been recognized by her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as an exemplary organization that contributes to the community. At the same time, the church has been authorized to use both the Queen’s Award emblem and the British honor of MBE.

Queen Elizabeth II herself signed the award certificate. The award’s purpose and meaning were clearly stated as follows:

“UK Zion, a group of volunteers from the World Mission Society Church of God, shares Mother’s love through a range of initiatives. We being cognizant of the said group’s outstanding voluntary work in the community, and being desirous of showing Our Royal Favour do hereby confer upon it.”

The WMSCOG Receiving the Queen’s Award is not by Chance
