What does the WMSCOG believe about the Sabbath Day?

In the World Mission Society Church of God (WMSCOG) we believe that the Sabbath Day – the day we should worship God – is Saturday and not Sunday. Now the basis for this belief and the importance of the Sabbath Day come directly from the Bible. From the beginning of time God showed us that the only day on which God rested, blessed and made holy was the seventh day of the week:

Genesis 2:1-3 – Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

The verse above shows that God rested, blessed and made holy the seventh day of the week. God never blessed the first day of the week, nor the second, nor the third. The only day God did all these things was on the seventh day. Through this we can understand the importance of the seventh day, and its importance grows to the extent that God made the observance of the seventh day one of the Ten Commandments. Let’s see among the ten which command speaks in regards to the seventh day of the week.

Exodus 20:8 – “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God…”

Here the verse clearly shows that God commanded to observe the Sabbath Day, which is the seventh day of the week according to God, as the Fourth Commandment. Then just as it is important not to steal, not to kill, not to have other gods, in the same way it is important to observe the Sabbath Day as a commandment from God.

 Then What Day is the Sabbath Day?

As you can see through the video above the calendar, the dictionary and the Bible itself testifies to Saturday being the seventh day of the week, and therefore being the Sabbath Day. This means that to observe the Fourth Commandment we need to keep Saturday as the Sabbath Day. Yet although it is very clear that Saturday is the day we should go to Church, people have the audacity to deny the observance of the Sabbath Day, and sometimes even try to prove through the Bible that Sunday is the day to go to church. To clarify the matter about what day we should observe the Sabbath day, the originators of Sunday service – the Roman Catholic Church—already admitted that there is no reference whatsoever in the Bible about Sunday observance.

Faith of Millions – John A O’Brien, 1974, pp. 400-401

In his book “Faith of Millions”, Reverend O’Brien clearly states that the idea of worshiping God on Sunday did not stem from any passage in the Bible, that instead this was a practice instituted by the Roman Catholic Church. This statement (although not proper since only God has the authority to change anything in the Bible) is at least true to the fact, contrary to other Christian churches who try to find excuses in the Bible for Sunday observance.

Lets take a look at another book which includes an interview with a Catholic Minister. He explains how the change of the day to worship God is by the authority of the Catholic Church

A Doctrinal Catechism – Rev. Stephen A. Keenan, 1876, pp.174

As Reverend Keenan just stated in his book, the reality is that, again, there is no evidence whatsoever for Sunday observance in the Bible…so please stop trying to find excuses, no really…just stop.

Was the Sabbath Day Abolished?

Contrary to the popular belief, the observance of the Sabbath Day was never abolished by  Jesus Christ, or the disciples. There is no reference whatsoever in the Bible about this, and many people throughout history have acknowledge this fact. The following are quotes from individuals from different Christian denominations that can testify to this fact.

“I honestly believe that this commandment [the Sabbath commandment] is just as binding today as it ever was. I have talked with men who have said that it has been abrogated [abolished], but they have never been able to point to any place in the Bible where God repealed it. When Christ was on earth, He did nothing to set it aside; He freed it from the traces under which the scribes and Pharisees had put it, and gave it its true place. ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.’ It is just as practicable and as necessary for men today as it ever was–in fact, more than ever, because we live in such an intense age. The [Seventh-day] Sabbath was binding in Eden, and it has been in force ever since. This Fourth Commandment begins with the word “remember,” showing that the Sabbath already existed when God wrote this law on the tables of stone at Sinai. How can men claim that this one commandment has been done away with when they will admit that the other nine are still binding?” — Weighed and Wanting; Dwight L. Moody, 1898, pp.46-47

Lets see one more quote from another Catholic priest:

“You may read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and you will not find a single line authorizing the sanctification of Sunday. The Scriptures enforce the religious observance of Saturday, a day which we never sanctify.” — The Faith of Our Fathers; James Cardinal Gibbons, 1980, pp.72-73

Through both of the statements above, we can confirm that there is no biblical reason for Sunday observance, or to neglect Saturday Sabbath as a day to worship God. So for all those individuals who try to show this verse, or that verse in the Bible trying to excuse their observance of Sunday service, don’t waste your time, simply admit that you’re not following the Bible, and that you follow a practice instituted by the Catholic Church.
